Meet Master Director, Kathy Scheel

Kathy Scheel joined Sweet Adelines International in 1971, and has been directing, choreographing, and coaching choruses a d quartets ever since! She has directed 5 choruses prior to Oregon Spirit: Cowlitz Valley Chorus (Longview, WA); Columbia River Chorus (Vancouver, WA); City of Roses (Portland, OR),  and Northwest Harmony (Vancouver, WA). All of these groups won honors at regional competition – including 2 Regional Championships, and on to the Sweet Adelines International Competitions in Houston, TX and Phoenix, AZ.  She also sang Lead in Columbia Connection quartet, winning the Regional Championship twice (and she's got a drawer full of 2nd Place Medals, too!).

Kathy is passionate about helping others become stronger singers and better all-around performers. She served on the Regional Management Team as Education Coordinator, and w
e were very proud when her service to Region 24 was recognized by honoring her with the prestigious Rose Achievement AwardShe is currently a member of the Region 12 Faculty and Education Steering Committee.

Before barbershop became her passion,  Kathy played classical violin in Symphony Orchestras in Seattle and Longview, then switched to the fiddle in Silver Mountain Bluegrass Band, and also played bass and guitar, then had a two-year stint as a recording studio musician.

Outside of her musical life with OSC, Kathy is the extremely proud mother of Ken Scheel, a graduate of Western Oregon University, and is retired and enjoying travel with friends.

Kathy encourages us to do our very best, and we continue to learn something new at each week's rehearsals, and she's got a great sense of humor so we laugh a lot while we're learning vocal and performance skills.  She guides us through all the facets of four-part harmony in the barbershop style, giving us the tools to create a wonderful performing experience!  We love our Kathy!
