Kathy Scheel joined Sweet Adelines International in 1971, and has been directing, choreographing, and coaching choruses ever since! She has directed 5 choruses prior to Oregon Spirit: Cowlitz Valley Chorus (Longview, WA); Columbia River Chorus (Vancouver, WA); City of Roses (Portland, OR),  and Northwest Harmony (Vancouver, WA). All of these groups won honors at regional competition – including 2 Regional Championships, and on to the Sweet Adelines International Competitions in Houston, TX and Phoenix, AZ.

Kathy is passionate about helping others become stronger singers and better all-around performers and is a sought-after coach for choruses and quartets all over the region, as well as giving private voice lessons. She served on the Regional Management Team of Region 24 of SAI and w
e were very proud when her service to Region 24 was recognized by honoring her with the prestigious Rose Achievement Award. She is currently a member of the Region 12 Faculty and Education Steering Committee.

Before barbershop became her “life-style”, Kathy played classical violin in Seattle and Longview Symphony Orchestras, then “fiddle”, guitar, and bass in Silver Mountain Bluegrass Band, followed by a stint as a studio musician in a recording studio.

Outside of her musical life with OSC, Kathy is the extremely proud mother of Ken Scheel, a graduate of Western Oregon University and is retired and enjoying travel with friends.

Our Director encourages us to do our very best, and we continue to learn something new each week. She teaches us vocal production, lyrical expression, characterization, synchronized singing, showmanship, rhythmic pulse, and performance skills. She guides us through all the facets of four-part harmony in the barbershop style, giving us the tools to create a wonderful performing experience! One of our chorus goals is to “keep Kathy happy” and now you know why!
